Coasteering in Pembrokeshire? Are you coming?

Pembrokeshire is the home of Coasteering, an adventurous blend of scrambling, swimming, tide level exploring and for the bold jumping into deep bits.  As an outdoor instructor, this is my favourite activity to do with a group.  It is the best ‘buzz’ activity I know as you are so close to nature, the elements and the feeling of ‘life on the edge’. You will get to explore sealife that no one else gets to witness, experience the rawness of the ocean currents and waves and an adrenalin rush that mere mortals usually don’t!!

Where do you go Coasteering in Pembrokeshire? What are the best spots? Who do I go Coasteering with? Lets explore.

Undoubtedly the best Coasteering sites are round the St Davids area, with Porthclais and Abereiddy, (the legendary Blue Lagoon) being 2 of them. However Moylegrove, in the North of the county, and Lydstep, with its caves, in the South both offering unspoilt spots. I love a mixture of a challenging scramble, a swim and some epic jumps. One sneaky route is Barafundle to Stackpole quay, offering opportunities for all 3 of these. I did this route on a low spring tide and saw polyps and sea sponges that I’ve never seen anywhere else. You will always sea or experience something new on each trip.

It is way safer and a better experience to coasteer with an organised group, and keeps the coastguards happy too! They know all the best places and the best times to go coasteering. TYF claim to have invented coasteering, however you will get an equally good experience from some of the newer centres like The Real Adventure Company or Celtic Quest. I prefer the smaller companies as you get to do, explore and jump more with a smaller group, choose one that offers a group size of less than 16. If you are going with friends, then still use all the safety gear and have one member of the party who is a surf lifeguard. Whatever you do and wherever you go, have fun safely.

F.A.Q.

What your parents never told you!

What do I need to bring?

Activity centre’s provide wetsuits, buoyancy aids and helmets. You will need to bring a pair of trainers, swimming gear, a full change of warm clothes and a towel. I would bring a hot flask too for after.

Can I take photos?

If you have a waterproof camera, go for it. Most instructors bring a kit bag, but no one will guarantee your camera for you.

What if I can’t swim?

This is not an issue – with a wetsuit and buoyancy aid you will float (and I mean really float!!) – just let your instructor know.

Can I coasteer with epilepsy or a disability?

Most times the answer is yes – just discuss it when you book and with your instructor.

Will I see wildlife?

You are in the same water as seals, dolphins, gannets, fish, puffins, razorbills and millions of other species – so yes you will – but right now I’m not sure which ones!!
